Windows 11 Pro — install and activate
Everything from the download to the moment the activation screen says you are done. You only need the one chapter that matches your situation — already on Pro, coming from Home, coming from Windows 10, or starting from nothing — so pick it from the list and skip the rest.
Which part do you need?
- Windows 11 Pro is already installed and you only need to enter the key Activate your key
- Your computer runs Windows 11 Home Upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro
- Your computer still runs Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 Pro
- A new or wiped computer, or you want a fresh start Clean install

Download Windows 11
Use the link below to download Windows 11. You only need it for a clean install: if the computer already runs Windows 11, skip straight to Activate your key, and if it runs Windows 10, follow Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 Pro.
Windows 11 installation media
The media creation tool: it builds a bootable USB stick for a clean install, and you choose the language inside the tool. Upgrading from Windows 10 instead? Follow Upgrade from Windows 10 further down.
There is one download for every edition
Microsoft does not publish a separate file for Home and Pro. The same media installs both, and your product key is what decides which edition you end up with. If Windows 11 Pro is already installed and you only need to enter your key, skip straight to Activate your key.
System requirements
Read this part before anything else. Windows 11 refuses to install on hardware that does not meet these. Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 are the two to check first.
| Component | Minimum for Windows 11 |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, with 2 or more cores, on a 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC) |
| RAM | 4 GB |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger |
| System firmware | UEFI, Secure Boot capable |
| TPM | Trusted Platform Module version 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 compatible, with a WDDM 2.0 driver |
| Display | High definition (720p), larger than 9" diagonally, 8 bits per color channel |
| Account | Internet access and a Microsoft account to finish first-time setup of Windows 11 Pro for personal use, as Microsoft states it. A workaround exists on Windows 11 Pro: see the note under Finish setup in the Clean install chapter |
Check before you buy, not after
Microsoft publishes a free tool called PC Health Check that answers this in one click. If yours does not pass, the cause can be Secure Boot or TPM switched off in the BIOS rather than hardware that is too old — both can be turned on in the BIOS settings when the hardware supports them.
Activate your key
If Windows 11 Pro is already installed and you only need to enter the key you bought, this is the whole job. It takes about a minute.
Open Settings. The quickest way is to type settings into the Start menu search box and open the first result.
Choose System in the left-hand column, then scroll down the right-hand side to Activation.
Expand Activation state and select Change, next to Change product key.
Before the key goes in, this screen can read Not active, sometimes with the code 0xC004F213. That only means no key has been entered on this machine yet; it is not a fault.
Type or paste the 25-character key from your delivery email. Include the hyphens. Then select Next.
Windows is activated. That message is the only confirmation that counts — close the dialog and you are done. To check again later, the same screen under Settings → System → Activation will say so at the top.
A Pro key will not simply activate Home
If the computer is currently running Windows 11 Home, a Pro key will not simply activate it — Windows has to switch edition first, and that is what the next chapter is for. Check which edition you have under Settings → System → About before you start.
One computer at a time
This license covers one computer at a time. Installing it on a second machine does not multiply it: a second activation can be refused, with a message about the key already having been used.
If you replace or rebuild your computer rather than adding one, stop using the key on the old machine and activate it on the new one. If activation is refused after several changes, do not keep trying: send us your order number and we will take it from there.
Upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro
If the computer came with Windows 11 Home, you do not need to reinstall anything and you will not lose a single file. Windows switches edition in place — but it needs two keys to do it, in this order.
Open the activation screen
Go to Settings → System → Activation, open Change product key and select Change, exactly as in the chapter above.
Enter the generic Pro key
Enter VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T, then select Next and follow the prompts. Windows will switch the machine from Home to Pro and restart.
This is a generic key that only switches the edition. It is not a license and it will not activate anything: its only job is to flip the edition so your real key has something to attach to. Your own key comes next.
Now enter the key you bought
Once the machine is back on Pro, return to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter the 25-character key from your delivery email.
Confirm and restart if asked
The activation screen should read Windows is activated. Windows sometimes asks for one more restart to finish applying the change.
If step 2 will not go through
Give it a few minutes and try again — the edition switch talks to Microsoft's servers and they are occasionally busy. If it still refuses, disconnect the computer from the internet, repeat step 2 offline, let it restart, then reconnect and carry on with step 3. That sounds odd, but offline Windows can apply the edition switch locally instead of checking online first.
Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 Pro
Coming from Windows 10? You do not need a clean install either. Windows 11 installs over the top and keeps your files and your programs. Two things to do first.
Check the machine qualifies
Download Microsoft's free PC Health Check and run it. It answers in one click, and it is worth doing before anything else: Windows 11 checks for TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported processor, and failing any of them stops the upgrade.
If it fails, the cause can be just TPM or Secure Boot switched off in the BIOS rather than hardware that is too old. Write to us with what the tool says and we will read it with you.
Run the Installation Assistant
Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 (opens in a new tab) and run it. Accept the terms and leave it alone — it downloads Windows 11 and upgrades the machine in place, keeping your files and installed programs.
It restarts several times and can take an hour or more, depending on your connection.
Enter your key
Once you reach the desktop, go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter the key from your delivery email, as in Activate your key above.
Coming from Windows 10 Home
Upgrading Windows 10 Home gives you Windows 11 Home, not Pro — the upgrade keeps the edition it finds. So finish the upgrade first, then follow Upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro above. Two steps, still no reinstall.
Clean install
This is for installing Windows 11 Pro from nothing — a new drive, or a machine you want wiped. If Windows is already running, one of the three chapters above will be quicker and will keep your files.
This erases the drive
A clean install formats the disk. Every file, program and password stored on it is gone, and there is no undo. Before you start: copy everything you want to keep to a separate drive or to cloud storage, and make sure you can still sign in to your email and your Microsoft account from another device.
If you have never done this before, it is worth doing it alongside someone who has.
What you need:
- A USB stick of at least 8 GB, which will itself be erased.
- A working Windows computer to prepare that USB stick — it can be the same machine, before you wipe it.
- Your product key, a Microsoft account (Windows 11 Pro has a workaround: see the note under Finish setup), and an hour or more.
Run the media creation tool
Run the media creation tool you downloaded with the Download Windows 11 button at the top of this guide. Accept the license terms to reach the first real screen.
Choose language and edition
Pick your Language and leave Edition on Windows 11 — that single entry contains both Home and Pro, and your key decides the rest. There is no architecture to choose: Windows 11 is 64-bit only.
Building the stick on the same machine you will install onto? Select the checkbox Use the recommended options for this PC and skip the choosing.
Choose USB flash drive
Select USB flash drive. The ISO option is only useful if you intend to burn a DVD or mount the file yourself.
Pick the stick
Plug in the USB stick, select it from the list, and continue. Everything on it will be deleted. If your stick is not listed, use Refresh drive list.
Wait for it to finish
The tool downloads Windows and writes it to the stick. This takes a while and needs a stable connection. When it says Your USB flash drive is ready, select Finish.
Boot the computer from the USB
Plug the stick into the computer you are installing on and switch it on, pressing the key that opens the boot menu. It is usually F12, F2, Esc or Del, and which one it is depends on the manufacturer — the screen normally tells you for a second as it starts.
Choose the USB stick from the list.
Start the installation
Choose your language and keyboard layout, then select Install now.
When it asks for a product key you can enter yours, or select I don't have a product key and do it at the end. If you skip it here, be sure to choose Windows 11 Pro on the next screen — pick Home and your Pro key will not simply activate it; you would then follow Upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro.
Choose where to install it
Select Custom: Install Windows only, then choose the drive. Delete the existing partitions on it if you are wiping the machine, and continue. This is the point of no return for the data on that disk.
Windows copies files and restarts several times on its own. Leave it alone until it reaches the setup questions.
Finish setup
Choose your country and keyboard, connect to the internet, and sign in with your Microsoft account. Using the same account you always use keeps your settings and OneDrive together.
Then set a PIN, answer the privacy questions, and wait for the desktop.
Setting up without a Microsoft account
Microsoft states that setting up Windows 11 for personal use requires an account, and Windows 11 pushes for one during setup. On Windows 11 Pro there is a workaround, and it may change in a future update: on the account screen choose Set up for work or school, then Sign-in options, then Domain join instead. That hands you a plain local account with a username and password.
Nothing about your license depends on this: the key activates either way. A Microsoft account can link the license to you, which can help if you reinstall later.
Activate
Go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter the key from your delivery email, exactly as in the Activate your key chapter above.
Downloads in other languages
The installation media is multilingual: you choose the language inside the media creation tool, so the same download serves every language. Windows 11 is 64-bit only, so there is no 32-bit version to choose either.
Your key does not depend on any of this. The same 25 characters activate Windows whatever language you installed it in, so ordering in one language and installing in another costs you nothing.
If activation fails
Windows shows a code when activation does not go through, and the code says what kind of problem it is. Look yours up below, or search the Activation Center, before writing to us.
Codes you may see
There is no phone number to call
Microsoft has retired telephone activation. There is no number left to call and nobody to read an installation ID to, so if a web page or a forum tells you to call Microsoft, it is out of date.
What replaced it is simpler: activation happens over the internet. If the machine cannot reach the internet at that moment, that is the actual problem and not your key: connect it, even briefly, and try again. If it is connected and still refuses, send us the code on screen and the order number from your payment confirmation email.
If a bare Windows Script Host box appears instead of the usual activation screen, Windows is telling you it has a code but not what it means. Open Command Prompt and run the command shown in the box — slui.exe 0x2a followed by the code — and the full explanation appears in a normal window. Send us that text and the order number from your payment confirmation email, and we will take it from there.
