Office will not install — remove the previous version first

An Office install can fail because another Office is already on the machine. Microsoft does not let two perpetual versions coexist, and the installer usually stops with a vague message rather than naming the cause.

The part that is easy to miss

An expired Microsoft 365 trial counts as an installed Office. It counts even if you never opened it, and even if it has been dead for a year. A new laptop can ship with one preinstalled, which is why it is easy to miss when you are certain you have no Office on the computer.

Removing it

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps.
  2. Look for anything beginning with Microsoft Office, Microsoft 365 or Office Hub. There may be more than one entry; remove all of them.
  3. Select the three dots next to each, then Uninstall, and confirm.
  4. Restart the computer. Do not skip this. Until you restart, files from the old installation are still locked and the new install will hit the same wall.
  5. Run the Office 2024 installer again.

Your documents are safe

Uninstalling Office removes the programs, not the files they made. Your Word documents, Excel workbooks and Outlook data stay where they are. If you use Outlook with a POP account, it is still worth noting where your data file lives before you start, simply because it is easier to check now than to look for it later.

When the uninstall itself fails

A broken Office installation can refuse to uninstall through Settings. The Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant is a free tool built for exactly this: it removes every trace of Office, including the pieces the normal uninstaller leaves behind. Search for it by name.
